Alkaline Diet

What is an Alkaline Diet and why should you be on one?

Many eczema sufferers only consider treating their skin externally, using ointments and steroid creams. Have you thought about treating your skin internally eating 90% of Alkaline foods? The majority of the foods we eat create acid wastes in our system, it is important to drink alkaline water and food. Research has suggested that foods that produce acid wastes are the main cause of allergic reactions. The theory behind an alkaline diet is that because our body's pH is slightly alkaline, with a normal range of 7 to 8, our diet should reflect this.

When our body metabolizes food, it leaves a residue which, when mixed with bodily fluids, has either acid or alkaline properties. When our body has a high acid pH, the body stores excess acid in fat tissues. The fat tissues can only store a limited amount of acid. When our fat tissues can't tolerate more, the body then turns to other healing options such as stealing nutrients like calcium from other parts of the body – which can cause numerous health problems. When the body loses the battle to neutralize the acid in your system, the acid harms vital organs and is released through the skin causing rashes and eczema flare ups.

Alkaline diets can be difficult to fit in your daily routine, for people who live on convenience foods and quick snacks. There are ways to work round that, by eating healthy alkaline snacks in between meals. For example, raisins, figs, dates, almonds, pieces of fruit are alkaline foods and very convenient.

Here are a brief list of typical alkaline and acid forming foods:

Alkaline - Asparagus, Onions, Vegetable Juices, Parsley, Raw Spinach, Broccoli, Garlic, Lemons, Watermelon, Limes, Dates, Figs, Melons, Grapes, Papaya, Kiwi, Berries, Apples, Pears, Raisins, Olive Oil, Lemon Water

Acid - Beer, Liquor, Soft Drinks, Artificial Sweeteners, Chocolate, Wheat, White Bread, Pastries, Biscuits, Pasta, Sweetened Fruit Juice, Beef, Pork, Shellfish, Cheese, Homogenized Milk, Ice Cream, Custard, Peanuts, Walnuts
