Antihistamine

Why use Antihistamine?

Antihistamines are used to treat hay fever, and other allergies. They prevent sneezing, runny nose, itching and watering of the eyes. You should use them during the hay fever season because if you use them all year round, they will gradually have little affect on any allergies you encounter. Your GP may prescribe a high dose antihistamine for a short term period to get you through a bad flare up.

What are the side affects?

  • You will probably feel sleepy and weak, that is why it's best to take a tablet before you go to bed. You should consult your GP if you have the following problems:
  • If you suffer from any kidney problems or liver disease.
  • Antihistamines pass into breast milk and may have side affects on your baby or if your pregnant. Don't take any without consulting your GP if you are breast feeding your baby.

Which Antihistamine should I take?

Zirtek is the most reliable antihistamine I have used. You can prescribe a non drowsy antihistamine from your GP.

What should you not do while on Antihistamine?

  • Whatever you do, don't drink large amounts of alcohol. This could increase drowsiness, confusion, and weakness.
  • Don't drink any caffeine or Coca Cola, as this could cause much confusion of the body and can cause severe headaches.
  • Don't take a high dose antihistamine during the day. Speak to your GP if you prefer to take antihistamines during the day and he/she could prescribe you a non drowsy antihistamine.
  • Don't take an overdose, as this could make you feel extremely sleepy.
