House Dust Mites

If you reduce dust mites in your house, you will dramatically improve your Eczema and Asthma!

It doesn't matter how clean your house is, your house is still surrounded by billions of microscopic beetle type insects. They survive by eating on dead human skin cells and they love warm, humid places like carpets, mattresses, sofas and soft furnishings. The dust mites themselves don't cause the reaction, its the protein in their excreta. Eczema sufferers deposit a lot of dead skin when they sleep. This provides a constant supply of food for the dust mites.

Changing your covers will reduce dust mites slightly, like a fishing net would against sand! Every time you move in bed you are blowing their excreta everywhere, making the excreta go through your nose and mouth.

Here's a list of points that can dramatically reduce house dust mites:

Mattresses - You spend about 35-40 percent of your life in bed, and when you sleep it gives your body the chance to repair itself. That is why it's very important to get a special hypoallergenic mattress protector or a foam/latex mattress, duvet covers and pillow protector to keep the dust mites away.

Bedlinen - You have to change your bedlinen at least once a week and always wash at high temperature. You can also get allergy free pillows and duvet-protectors. Avoid anything with feathers in them.

Furnishing - Buy Roller blinds, instead of buying curtains because they are easier to clean and avoid venetian blinds which collect a lot of dust. Don't buy soft furnishings as they are more likely to collect dust, buy a leather sofa, plastic chairs to reduce dust mites. If you cannot afford a new leather sofa, you can always get removable covers and remember to wash them frequently. Beds and furnishings can be heat treated to get rid of the house dust mites.

Cleaning - When you clean always use a vacuum instead of sweeping as this stirs up the dust. You can buy a vacuum model with a filter specially designed for people with allergies. Always use a damp cloth to dust because dry dusting will spread dust mite droppings.

Central Heating - Don't buy any blow heaters or convector heater as they will blow dust around. If you already have one, try to replace them if you can afford it.

Toys - If your child has a cuddly toy, make sure you put the toy in the freezer for a few hours to kill the dust mites. You can buy allergy free toys, if you feel it takes up your time.
