Supplements

Do we really need supplements?

Do we really need vitamins or mineral supplements when we can get just as much out of eating a few pieces of fruit and vegetables a day? You are also getting fibre, which supplements don't contain.

Why take Supplements?

There are many reason why people take supplements. You might have dry skin, protein deficiency, your child isn't getting enough vitamins and minerals and many more reasons.

Parents find it terribly difficult to feed their children fruit and vegetables usually ending in surrendering to the whining and settling on giving their children fast food meals. Vitamin supplements can be helpful, but don't think this will cure the situation in the long term. This is why the number of children having colds, fevers and other illnesses are increasing dramatically. This is why it's so important to give your children a healthy diet, and keep sweets and chocolate to a bare minimum.

Vegetarians don't eat many foods that contain high content of protein, like meat and dairy products. Protein is important for strong bones and teeth, and many vegetarians miss this. Vitamin supplements can be a good substitute for this problem.

People who are allergic to certain foods don't take the minerals and vitamins they need. Fish contains omega oils, which are vital for healing dry skin, but fish has a very high allergy risk. There are plenty of other oil supplements you can take to replace fish oils.

Which vitamin supplement should I take?

Try to take a Multivitamin rather than one or two specific supplements unless your GP has advised you to take them. Multivitamins give you a sufficient amount of a variety of vitamins and minerals, so you body doesn't miss anything. Liquid supplements are less harmful than Solid supplements because the body eliminates these quicker.

For dry skin you should take the following supplements:

Essential Fatty Acids: Essential fatty acids are important for your immune system. The following oils are very strong anti-inflammatory agents:

You can take these oils as a dressing alternative or you can take supplements which you take morning and night.

Always take a bit less than the supplement is advising at first. People don't realize how powerful Omega supplements are, and can cause side affects if you over use. Omega supplements will say on the labelling, to take 3-4 teaspoons a day. You should take one or two a day at first. Try this for a week, and gradually increase the dosage. If you notice any side affects in the first week or two, stop using the supplement.

Zinc: Many vegetarians find it difficult to find foods that contain Zinc because it is most commonly found in meat. Zinc is beneficial at repairing the immune system. Your body is crying out for Zinc when you have an eczema flare up or an injury and deficiency of Zinc delays down the healing process dramatically. If you aren't a vegetarian and you cannot live without meat, try leaving out red meat and stick to organic chicken (White Meat).
