UVB Treatment ( Phototherapy )

Is it any wonder eczema suffers in the UK have dry skin when we only get 3 months of sun a year? The sun is one of the most important treatments for healthy skin.

UV light helps chemical reactions that affect the function of the skin cells. This means that the number cells do not increase so quickly and will eventually act like ordinary skin.

Phototherapy can be an affective way of treating eczema during those horrid winter months, but it is not recommended for children or sufferers who have flare ups when exposed to sunlight.

What Will Happen?

UV light affects the immune system, and can prevent further inflammation. You will be advised by a dermatologist on, how long and frequent you should have Phototherapy treatment. You will usually have this treatment 2-4 times a week for Narrowband, sessions usually last for a minute or two depending on severity. You will need to do this regime for 7 weeks and then your dermatologist will consult you if you need further treatment.

Negatives:

UV light can cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. This is only in extreme cases of over exposure to UV light. This should not be a turn off, and is definitely worth a try.
